Not Enough War Bonds 06-08-17

This article describes the problem of a lack of war bond sales.  The article describes that though the rich and the poor are buying bonds, the middle "class" is not, although the article claims that America is a classless society. The article argues the benefits for the country and for the buyer when an American buys a liberty bond. A liberty loan would be used to buy weapons, food and supplies for the troops at war.

06-07-17 Raising Money for War Bonds

In order to raise money for the war, a major campaign took place raising money from both the rich and the poor.  Cleveland was given a quota of $45,000,000 and even working-class workers were buying $50 in bonds. Men and women from every economic class were expected to play a role in the purchase of liberty bonds and the reaching of the $45,000,000 quota. This quota was reached by utilizing a number of different techniques like going door to door, holding rallies, and setting up in public places like Nela Park.

"War's Woes Told By Canton Youth Lieutenant Was "Gassed" in Rushing Shells to Front Line." Plain Dealer 25 Nov. 1917: 7. NewsBank. Web. 19 May 2016.
A Canton man nicknamed "Bob" was gassed by Germans as he was rushing ammunition to the French front line in the war.

During World War 1 chemical weapons first saw real use especially in the form of gas weapons. Among these gases was chlorine gas. A Canton man, Robert MacKenzie joined the war a month before America did by joining the French troops, and came face to face with said gas. During a return trip from a trench supply drop his truck was under fire and he was forced into driving through gas bombs in "No Man's Land", the land in between the opposing trenches. The Boches, or Germans, used chlorine gas in such high concentrations that it was fatal within minutes. It would react to your lungs' membranes and create hydrochloric acid all throughout your airways. Lieutenant MacKenzie  managed to survive, bringing home the gas mask that saved his life. Before the invention of the gas mask chlorine gas had taken the lives of hundreds during the war.

A German-American Surgeon’s Attempt to Demonstrate Her Loyalty to the USA.

Frieda E. Weiss, an American surgeon, and the only female surgeon in all of Cleveland, was born in Germany, but offered her services to the US government in the midst of WWI, a time where Germans were distrusted and faced persecution in the US. Weiss’s story shows how German-Americans treaded carefully during WWI as to not appear unfaithful to the US, but it also shows how German-Americans attempted to do their part to support the war effort and in effect show they were no different from any other Americans.

Title: this is showing how much the city of cleveland contributed to the war effort in monetary numbers. War bonds and other donations helped the allies win the war at home.
